Police laser guns, commonly known as LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), work on the principle of time-of-flight to measure a vehicle's speed. Unlike radar guns that use radio waves, LIDAR relies on light in the form of a narrow, focused laser beam. When a police officer points the laser gun at a vehicle, it emits a series of light pulses that reflect off the vehicle and return to the gun. The LIDAR device measures the time it takes for those light pulses to travel to the target vehicle and back.

This time measurement is incredibly fast and precise since light travels at a constant speed of approximately 299,792 kilometers per second. By knowing the time and the speed of light, the distance the light has traveled can be calculated. When the gun fires a series of these pulses in a short timeframe, it can establish how far the vehicle has traveled between pulses. From these measurements, the LIDAR gun can calculate the speed of the vehicle with a high degree of accuracy.

As for "beating" LIDAR, that's where laser jammers come in. Laser jammers operate by detecting the infrared light signal from a police LIDAR gun and responding with their own light signal. This signal is intended to confuse the LIDAR gun, preventing it from getting an accurate reading of the vehicle's speed. A laser jammer typically emits light on the same wavelength as the police laser, but with a much higher intensity, resulting in the original signal being lost or obscured by ambient light levels.

Again, it's important to stress that operating a vehicle safely and within speed limits is the most effective way to avoid speeding tickets and contribute to road safety.
